Model Photography Biography
Decades before current street style mavens Scott Schuman, Tommy Ton, the inimitable Bill Cunningham and company emerged as household names, photographers like Austrian-born Lisette Model were pioneering the art of the now-ubiquitous candid portrait. Though Model began studying under the wing of composer Arnold Schonberg at the age of 19, in the early 1930s she turned her attention to visual arts, taking a particular liking to photography. It was during the mid-30s, in the years leading up to the Second World War, that Model would produce some of her most iconic images. While visiting her mother in southern France, Model turned her lens to the wealthy vacationers on the Promenade des Anglais in Nice, capturing what are now her most frequently reproduced and exhibited portraits. The close-up, unforgiving, and almost startlingly candid nature of these particular portraits would become Model’s signature style. As illustrated in last year’s critically acclaimed exhibition at New York’s Bruce Silverstein Gallery, Model’s style was, in many ways, in keeping with the exaggerated aesthetic of early-20th Century European Expressionism.
Though Model’s primary focus wasn’t necessarily on her subjects’ sartorial choices, she has enabled us to glimpse the day-to-day attire of bygone eras – and with a medium undeniably more interesting than a history textbook. After emigrating to Manhattan with her new husband in 1937, Model’s work frequently graced the pages of Carmel Snow’s Harper’s Bazaar, and her focus turned to capturing the goings-on of the city. During the '40s, the eccentric patrons of New York' many nightclubs found themselves at the mercy of Model's lens, which captured everyone from bar-hopping naval officers to not-so-young bag ladies on the Lower East Side. Simply put, Lisette Model has left us with a collection of images whose content and character just can't be rivalled.
